Behind The Scenes - Who's Who
The American Theatre Wing
Sondra Gilman, Chairman
Douglas B. Leeds, President
Howard Sherman, Executive Director

Since its inception, the American Theatre Wing has been in the forefront of serving both the theatre community and the community at large through its various programs.

The American Theatre Wing is perhaps best known as the founder of the Antoinette Perry "Tony" Awards. As the founder of the American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards®, the Wing initially had its awards broadcast on radio and subsequently televised on local New York stations. Since 1967, it has presented the program in partnership with The Broadway League on network television. The Tonys have now become an American institution honoring excellence in the Broadway theatre. But this of course is only a small part of the Wing's story, as is evident by the continuous and diverse array of programs that the Wing provides.

"Working in the Theatre" Seminars.
Now in its 30th year, this dynamic program brings together the theatre's top performers, producers, playwrights, directors, choreographers and designers to discuss the rewards and realities of working in the theatre. These seminars are shown five times a week in New York on CUNY-TV and are available internationally at www.americantheatrewing.org.

SpringboardNYC
Springboard NYC is a college-to-career transition program that equips young people for their transition from a protective academic training environment to a competitive professional life. Springboard NYC provides up-to-date, practical, hands-on career guidance for college students in the arts. The theatrical immersion curriculum includes a series of workshops, seminars, master classes and field trips, placing participants in the center of New York's theatrical community, with access to influential working artists. Students learn job seeking skills and urban survival tools to translate their academic training into productive careers. www.springboardnyc.org

Downstage Center
A collaboration with XM Satellite Radio, Downstage Center is a national weekly theatre interview show offering in-depth conversation with top theatre artists both on stage and behind the scenes. Broadcast four times weekly on XM, "Downstage Center" is archived as free streaming audio on ATW's website.

Grants Programs
For over 40 years, the Wing has honored Off and Off-Off Broadway theatre companies for a continuing commitment to quality in the theatre. Annually more than 50 New York not-for-profit theatres receive grants enabling them to continue their creative endeavors in classical, contemporary and experimental forms.

Theatre Intern Group
Theatre Intern Group creates social and professional development opportunities for the young people who work in theatrical offices, enabling them to build contacts with their peers immediately upon starting work in the theatrical community. Monthly panel discussions on the many facets of the theatrical field offer intimate opportunities for the interns to learn from professionals with 5 to 10 years of experience - long enough to be immersed in the profession, but not so far removed from the experiences of the interns themselves.

Scholarship Awards
The American Theatre Wing provides scholarships for young people in public schools to further their studies in the craft of theatre. The Wing funds the Isabelle Stevenson Scholarship at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, the American Theatre Wing Scholarship at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, the Brendan Gill Playwriting Award at Talent Unlimited High School and the Lloyd Richards Directors Scholarship at The Juilliard School.

Guide to Careers in Theatre
In partnership with The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, the Guide is a series of videotaped interviews with notable theatre personalities describing how to prepare for a specific theatrical career; also available on the Wing's website.

The Hewes Design Awards
These annual awards, originally called the Maharam Awards and later known as the American Theatre Wing Design Awards, honor designers from Off and Off-Off Broadway, as well as Broadway, for designs originating in the United States.
