A highlight of the evening was "Forty Years of Broadway Show Music," which included songs from Finian's Rainbow; High Button Shoes; Kiss Me, Kate; South Pacific; Guys & Dolls; The King and I; Wonderful Town; Kismet; Damn Yankees; My Fair Lady; West Side Story; Flower Drum Song; Fiorello!; The Sound of Music; Gypsy; Bye,Bye, Birdie; Camelot; How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying; A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum; Hello, Dolly!; Fiddler on the Roof; Man of La Mancha; Mame; On a Clear Day You Can See Forever; Sweet Charity; Cabaret; Hallelujah, Baby!; Hair; Applause; Company; Two Gentlemen of Verona; Follies; A Little Night Music; Pippin; Seesaw; The Wiz; A Chorus Line; Annie; Ain't Misbehavin'; Sweeney Todd; Evita; 42nd Street; Nine; Cats; La Cage aux Folles; Big River.

The ceremony also included an all-star tribute to 40 years of Tony Award-winning plays, from Cyrano de Bergerac (1947) to Biloxi Bllues (1985). Distinguished actors and actresses of the past and present, including many of the original performers, spoke each play's most memorable lines.
