Whoopi Goldberg Will Host the 2008 Tonys

By Ben Pesner

She’s a Tony Award®-winning producer, an actress, singer, writer, comedienne, and talk-show host. She rocketed to fame with a one-woman Broadway show, and went on to become one of the most recognizable faces in the entertainment industry. And now she lends her star power to the biggest event of the Broadway season: the American Theatre Wing’s Tony Awards® ceremony. Ms. Goldberg will be on hand at Radio City Music Hall® to host the 62nd annual awards on Sunday, June 15. She’ll preside over the 2008 Tony telecast, which will air on CBS beginning at 8/7c.

A veteran Oscar telecast emcee, this will be her first time as Tony host. "I'm going to be more like a storyteller," said Ms. Goldberg on the May 8 broadcast of "The View." "It's really all about Broadway." In an earlier statement she said, “I love Broadway and I’m thrilled to be doing anything for the first time. I’m gonna have a blast.”

The executive producers of the Tony Awards welcomed Ms. Goldberg to the Tonys this way. “How lucky are we to have such a legendary performer presiding over this year’s Tony Awards!” said Glenn Weiss. And Ricky Kirshner added, “Whoopi not only brings with her an immense amount of star-power, but also a charm and humor that is all her own.”

A Broadway and Hollywood Superstar

Ms. Goldberg first appeared on Broadway in a 1984 self-titled one-woman show which she wrote and performed in. Stephen Speilberg then tapped her to star in the film version of The Color Purple, which appeared the following year and earned her an Oscar nomination. Over the next two decades she appeared in numerous Hollywood movies, winning an Oscar for her performance in Ghost in 1990.

She returned to Broadway in the mid-1990s, taking over the role of Pseudolus (from Nathan Lane) in the musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. She won a 2002 Tony Award as a producer of that year’s Best Musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie. She also produced and starred as the title character in a revival of August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. A 20th-anniversary Broadway revival of her show Whoopi Goldberg received a Tony nomination as Best Special Theatrical Event in 2005.

Having also won a Daytime Emmy Award and a Grammy Award, she is one of the few individuals who can show off each one of the four major show business awards on her mantel: the Oscar, the Tony, the Emmy, and the Grammy.

Ms. Goldberg is a veteran when it comes to presiding over televised awards shows. She has hosted no fewer than four Academy Awards telecasts, in 1994, 1996, 1999, and 2002.

She currently spends her mornings moderating discussions of current issues and events on the TV talk show “The View.”

The 2008 Tony Awards

With Ms. Goldberg as their host, the 62nd Annual Tony Awards will be presented at Radio City Music Hall® in New York City on Sunday, June 15. CBS will broadcast the awards in a live, three-hour special beginning at 8:00 p.m./7c (delayed PT). The Tonys are presented by Tony Award Productions, a joint venture of The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing.
