The Heiress is based on Washington Square, a short novel by Henry James originally published in 1880. Adapted for the stage by Ruth and Augustus Goetz, The Heiress opened on Broadway in 1947. The play has been revived on Broadway several times, including a 1995 staging starring Cherry Jones and Philip Bosco that received a Tony Award as Best Revival of a Play. Olivia de Havilland, Ralph Richardson and Montgomery Clift starred in a 1949 film of the play. Another film version (1997) starred Jennifer Jason Leigh, Albert Finney, Ben Chaplin and Maggie Smith.
