Sigourney Weaver, David Hyde Pierce, and Kristine Nielsen star in Christopher Durang’s new comedic riff on some of Anton Chekov’s most time-tested themes.
Christopher Durang’s new comedic riff on some of Anton Chekov’s most time-tested themes tells the story of step-siblings Vanya (David Hyde Pierce) and Sonia (Kristine Nielsen). Although they have never left the confines of their childhood home -- a rambling farmhouse in Bucks County, PA -- they have witnessed from afar the glamorous exploits of their sister, Masha (Sigourney Weaver), a famous movie actress. A surprise visit from Masha and her 20-something boy toy, Spike (Billy Magnussen), throws the normally quiet household into utter upheaval as its residents and visitors get swept up in an intoxicating mixture of lust, rivalry, regret, and the sudden possibility of escape. Only one thing is certain: no one will get out of this without looking absolutely ridiculous!
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike premiered at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey in 2012, and was subsequently seen Off Broadway at Lincoln Center Theatre in New York City.
