ABOUT THE SHOW
This new musical brings to life the iconic and inspiring story of struggling small-time Philly boxer, Rocky Balboa, who gets a once-in-a-lifetime shot to go the distance against heavyweight champ Apollo Creed. Both an adrenaline-infused spectacle and a surprising story of blossoming romance between two lonely outsiders, Rocky is a heart-stopping and viscerally theatrical musical for everyone brave enough to follow their dream. The score is by the Ragtime team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, with a book by Thomas Meehan and Sylvester Stallone.
Produced on a shoestring budget, the original 1976 film was shot in 28 days, and starred its young and then-unknown screenwriter, Sylvester Stallone.
Rocky is the first show to open at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre since 2001. The building’s long-running previous tenant, Mamma Mia!, moved to the Broadhurst Theatre in the fall of 2013 to make room for Rocky.
Rocky received its world premiere in fall 2012 in Hamburg, Germany. The original film opened in 1976, won the Academy Award as Best Picture, and spawned five movie sequels.
