ABOUT THE SHOW

The Audience takes theatregoers behind the walls of Buckingham Palace and into the private chambers of Queen Elizabeth II (played by Helen Mirren) as she meets with each of her Prime Ministers, from when she was a young mother to now, as a great grandmother. Through these private audiences, we see glimpses of the woman behind the crown and witness the moments that shaped a monarch.

TRIVIA

  • Dame Helen Mirren won an Oscar for her portrayal of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II in a previous project— the film The Queen, which was also written by The Audience playwright Peter Morgan.
  • In addition to Mirren, the cast also Olivier Award-winner Richard McCabe, who was honored for his supporting performance as one of the Prime Ministers, Harold Wilson; and two-time past Tony Award-winner Judith Ivey as Margaret Thatcher.

    HISTORY

The world premiere of Peter Morgan’s play took place in London’s West End in the winter of 2013, with Helen Mirren in the title role—a performance for which she won an Olivier Award.
