An American classic returns to Broadway with a powerhouse cast including celebrated London star Cynthia Erivo as “Celie,” and "Orange is the New Black" star Danielle Brooks. With a fresh, joyous score of jazz, ragtime, gospel and blues, this stirring family chronicle follows the inspirational Celie, as she journeys from childhood through joy and despair, anguish and hope to discover the power of love and life.

  • Oprah Winfrey, who made her film debut in the movie version of A Color Purple, produced the musical’s original Broadway staging, and is also a producer of this revival.
  • The Color Purple film received 11 Academy Award nominations. Coincidently, the original Broadway production received 11 Tony Award nominations.

HISTORY

The original production of The Color Purple opened on Broadway in 2005 and played 910 performances. This production opened in London during the summer of 2013 at the Menier Chocolate Factory before transferring to Broadway. The musical is based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and the 1985 Hollywood film it spawned.
