Mama Rose (Patti LuPone) is a woman with a mission: to see her daughter June succeed on Broadway, by way of vaudeville. When June marries and leaves the act, Rose turns her hope and attention to her shy, less talented daughter Louise. Rose books Louise into a burlesque house by mistake; she is forced into the spotlight and comes into her own.

History
Suggested by the memoirs of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, the Arthur Laurents/Jule Styne/Stephen Sondheim musical Gypsy first opened on Broadway in 1959. It has since been revived four times. This production played the New York City Center Encores! Summer Stars series in 2007 before opening on Broadway under bookwriter Laurents's direction.
