The Heiress
Jessica Chastain starred in Ruth & Augustus Goetz’s New York love story about Catherine Sloper (Ms. Chastain), a protected young woman who finds herself caught between her steely, grief-stricken father (David Strathairn) and a mysterious, handsome suitor (Dan Stevens). Catherine must navigate the terrain of love and regret, desire and duty, a chance for happiness and the burden of fortune…as only an heiress can. Past Tony Award-winner Judith Ivey was featured as Catherine’s Aunt Penniman.

HISTORY

The Heiress is based on Washington Square, a short novel by Henry James originally published in 1880. Adapted for the stage by Ruth and Augustus Goetz, The Heiress opened on Broadway in 1947. The play has been revived on Broadway several times, including a 1995 staging starring Cherry Jones and Philip Bosco that received a Tony Award as Best Revival of a Play. Olivia de Havilland, Ralph Richardson and Montgomery Clift starred in a 1949 film of the play. Another film version (1997) starred Jennifer Jason Leigh, Albert Finney, Ben Chaplin and Maggie Smith.

TRIVIA

  • Ms. Chastain was nominated for an Academy Award for Zero Dark 30 while appearing on Broadway in The Heiress.
  • The production closed one day earlier than expected so she could travel to the UK to attend the BAFTA Awards when she was nominated for Zero Dark 30.
  • The novel was adapted as an opera by Thomas Pasatieri in 1976.
