Lucky Guy spotlights the charismatic and controversial tabloid columnist Mike McAlary, played by Tom Hanks. From his sensational reporting of New York’s major police corruption to the libel suit that nearly ended his career, Nora Ephron’s play dramatizes the story of McAlary’s meteoric rise, fall and rise again, ending with his coverage of the Abner Louima case for which he won the Pulitzer Prize, shortly before his untimely death on Christmas Day, 1998.

Ephron originally wrote Lucky Guy as a screenplay, before transforming the work into a playscript. This is a world-premiere production.


  • Mike McAlary (1957-1998) was a renowned journalist and columnist at the New York Daily News.
  • Playwright Nora Ephron began her professional career as a reporter at the New York Post in 1962, and Lucky Guy marks a return to her journalistic roots.
  • A successful writer in many genres, three of Ephron’s screenplays received Oscar nominations (Silkwood, When Harry Met Sally..., and Sleepless in Seattle). She died of complications from leukemia in June 2012 at the age of 71.
