Act OneAmy Warren, Santino Fontana, Bob Stillman, and Will LeBow (l. to r.) in Act One by James Lapine from the autobiography by Moss Hart.
SUMMARY

The ultimate valentine to the theatre and a Dickensian story of a young immigrant and his family in the early 20th century. James Lapine directs his own adaptation of Moss Hart’s classic autobiography which eloquently chronicles the playwright/director’s impoverished childhood and his determined struggle to escape poverty. Hart forges a career in the theatre which leads to his collaboration with George S. Kaufman that culminates with his first great success, Once in a Lifetime.

HISTORY

Moss Hart’s memoir Act One was published in 1959. This adaptation is a world-premiere production.

TRIVIA

  • Hart’s memoir is widely considered one of the finest books about the theatre ever written. It was adapted into a 1963 film.
  • Hart is the author, with Geroge S. Kaufman, of such classic stage comedies as You Can't Take It With You (1936) and The Man Who Came to Dinner (1939). He directed many Broadway shows, including the original production of My Fair Lady, for which he won a Tony Award.
  • The opening night cast includes past Tony-winners Chuck Cooper and Andrea Martin, along with past nominees Santino Fontana, Tony Shalhoub, and Bob Stillman.
