ABOUT THE SHOW

Deaf West's innovative new production takes this already revolutionary musical to electrifying new heights by choreographing sign language into the production, intensifying the rift between the lost and longing teenagers and the adults who refuse who refuse to hear them. Starring Golden Globe and Academy Award®-winner Marlee Matlin (Children of a Lesser God).

Trivia

  • The musical is based on the 1891 play Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind. Known in the original German as Frühlings Erwachen, the play has frequently been banned and censored due to its controversial subject matter.
  • The Deaf West production is performed simultaneously in American Sign Language and spoken and sung in English by a cast of 28. The only pervious staging of a Broadway musical in English and ASL was the company’s 2003 revival of Big River.

History

The original production of Spring Awakening, which originated at Off Broadway’s Atlantic Theatre Company, received eight 2007 Tony Awards including Best Musical. This production was staged by Deaf West in Los Angeles in the fall of 2014 before transferring to Broadway.
