ABOUT THE SHOW
On September 11, 2001 the world stopped. In a heartbeat, 38 planes with 6,579 passengers were stranded in a remote town in Newfoundland. The locals opened their hearts and homes, hosting this international community of strangers – spurring unexpected camaraderie in extraordinary circumstances. On September 12, their stories moved us all.
- The show is based on actual events that took place on September 11, 2001 and the days that followed in and around the town of Gander in Newfoundland, an island off the east coast of Canada. The travelers who landed there on diverted planes were said by locals to have "come from away."
- To create the musical, Canadian writers Irene Sankoff and David Hein traveled to Newfoundland for the 10th Anniversary commemoration of that fateful week. They collected hundreds of hours of interviews that have been distilled into the 100-minute show.
The musical was originally co-produced in 2015 by La Jolla Playhouse and Seattle Repertory Theater. It played pre-Broadway engagements in Washington, DC and Toronto.
