The Story
John Lithgow plays Lawrence Jameson, a sophisticated con man living on the French Riviera. He makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money. Enter a small-time crook named Freddy Benson (Norbert Leo Butz), who more humbly swindles women by eliciting their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother's failing health. After meeting on a train, the two unsuccessfully attempt to work together, only to find that their small French town isn't big enough for the two of them. They agree on a settlement: Working apart, the first one to extract $50,000 from a young heiress (Sherie Rene Scott) wins, and the other must leave town. A hilarious battle of cons ensues, bringing out the best and worst in each, ending with an unexpected twist.
History
This musical premiered at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego in the autumn of 2004. It is based on the 1988 film of the same name, which itself is a remake of the 1964 picture Bedtime Story.
