The Story
George (Bill Irwin) is a professor at a small college in New England; his wife, Martha (Kathleen Turner), is the daughter of the college president. One evening, after a party at the president's house, they invite a young faculty couple over for a nightcap. Marriage itself becomes a battleground as the older couple take their guests through a series of alcohol-fueled games that lead to a roller coaster of emotion, revelation, and truth.
History Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf was a sensation when it opened on Broadway in October 1962. It was Edward Albee's first Broadway play, and it won five 1963 Tony Awards including Best Play, as well Best Actor honors for Arthur Hill (George) and Uta Hagen (Martha). The playwright directed a 1976 revival starring Ben Gazzara and Colleen Dewhurst. The 1966 film adaptation starred Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. This production played an out-of-town tryout in Boston.
