The Story
Set in 1904, Gem of the Ocean begins on the eve of Aunt Ester's 287th birthday (she is a character first encountered in an earlier work by playwright August Wilson, Two Trains Running, and whose death is told in Wilson's King Hedley II). Citizen Barlow, a man in spiritual turmoil, arrives in Aunt Ester's house in Pittsburgh's Hill District. He soon embarks on a journey to find the mythic City of Bones, leading him into startling discoveries and setting him off on a course of duty and redemption.
History
Though first in chronological order, this is the ninth play in August Wilson's ten-play cycle chronicling the African American experience through each decade of the 1900s. The play premiered at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago in April 2003. A subsequent production opened the following July at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. It came to Broadway via the Huntington Theatre Company in Boston.
