The Story
Based on the novella by Elizabeth Spencer, The Light in the Piazzais set in the summer of 1953. This musical by Craig Lucas and Adam Guettel tells the story of a mother and daughter traveling through Italy, the daughter's romance with a handsome, high-spirited Florentine, and the mother's determined efforts to keep the two apart.

History
The Light in the Piazza was produced at the Intiman Theatre in Seattle and the Goodman Theatre in Chicago before opening on Broadway under the auspices of Lincoln Center Theater.

? Hume Cronyn won a Tony as Best Featured Actor in a Play for Hamlet (1964). His wife, Jessica Tandy, won three Tonys as Best Actress in a Play: for A Streetcar Named Desire (1948), The Gin Game (1978), and Foxfire (1983). They both received Special Tony Awards for Lifetime achievement in 1994.
