The Story
Spanning 150 years of Japanese history, Pacific Overtures tells the story of Commodore Matthew Perry's arrival in the "Floating Kingdom" of Nippon in 1853. It chronicles the influence of America on Japan, detailing and dramatizing the westernization of Japanese culture. The style of the musical is based on ancient forms of Japanese theatre such as Kabuki and Noh.
History
The first collaboration between composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim and librettist John Weidman, Pacific Overtures premiered at the Winter Garden Theatre in 1976, earning 10 Tony nominations that year. It won for Best Costume Design and Best Lighting Design.
