The Story
Set against the steamy backdrop of New Orleans' gritty French Quarter, A Streetcar Named Desire tells the story of Blanche Du Bois (Natasha Richardson), a faded Southern belle driven to madness by her animalistic brother-in-law, Stanley Kowalski (John C. Reilly). She arrives on her sister's doorstep, having left the town they grew up in, when their plantation home is lost. Stanley begins to dig into her past, and her nerves begin to fray.
History
Tennessee Williams' play first appeared on Broadway in 1947, starring Marlon Brando and Jessica Tandy. It made a star of Brando, who reprised his role in the 1951 film adaptation opposite Vivian Leigh. Streetcar has been revived several times on Broadway, and remains one of Williams’ most popular plays.
