Groundhog Day is the story of Phil Connors, a big city weatherman who comes to a small town and is mysteriously forced to relive the same day over and over again—to hilarious and moving results. As each day plays out exactly the same as before Phil becomes increasingly despondent, but is there a lesson to be learned through his experiences?

  • The creative team includes many of the creators of Matilda the Musical: director Matthew Warchus, composer/lyricist Tim Minchin, and choreographer Peter Darling.
  • Groundhog Day was popularized in the U.S. in the 1880s. It takes place on February 2 when, according to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow, spring will arrive early; if it is sunny, the groundhog will see its shadow and retreat into its den, indicating six more weeks of winter weather. The largest annual celebration of the event occurs in Punxsutawney, PA, where the musical is set.

The musical premiered at The Old Vic in London in the summer of 2016. It is based on the 1993 film of the same title with a screenplay by Danny Rubin and Harold Ramis, based on a story by Rubin, directed by Ramis, and starring Bill Murray. The film was added to the United States National Film Registry in 2006.
