ABOUT THE SHOWIndecent
charts the journey of an incendiary drama and the artists who risked their lives to perform a play seen by some as a seminal work of Jewish culture, and by others as an act of traitorous libel. Created by Paula Vogel and director Rebecca Taichman and set at a time when waves of immigrants were changing the face of America, this play with music is a riveting look at an explosive moment in theatrical history.\\
- Sholem Asch’s 1907 play God of Vengeance was staged all over Europe, as well as Off Broadway. However, when the controversial work was produced on Broadway in 1923, the entire cast was arrested and successfully prosecuted on obscenity charges, in part because the play depicted a lesbian relationship.
- Playwright Paula Vogel, the author of such frequently-produced works as How I Learned to Drive and The Baltimore Waltz, makes her Broadway debut with this production.
Vogel’s play premiered in the fall of 2015 at Yale Repertory Theatre in Connecticut. It was subsequently produced at the La Jolla Playhouse in California and Off Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre.
