This new musical from the Tony Award-winning creators of the Broadway classic Ragtime is inspired by the Twentieth Century Fox motion pictures. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love, and family.

  • The 1956 film was the source material for a different Broadway musical, the short-lived 1965 tuner Anya.
  • Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna was the youngest daughter of Nicholas II, the last Tsar of Russia, and his wife, Tsarina Alexandra Fyodorovna. Whether she actually was able to escape from execution and survive was one of the most popular historical mysteries of the 20th century.

Anastasia premiered at Connecticut’s Hartford Stage in the spring of 2016. It is inspired by the 1956 Hollywood motion picture and the 1997 animated film musical, both of which share the musical’s title. The show includes an original score from Ragtime’s Stephen Flaherty (music) and Lynn Ahrens (lyrics), along with several songs from the 1997 film.
