- The musical is based on the Nickelodeon television show SpongeBob Squarepants, created by Stephen Hillenburg. The show first aired in 1999.
- The score is comprised of songs written for the production by a raft of pop music icons including Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler & Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper & Rob Hyman, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T's, They Might Be Giants, T.I., Domani & Lil' C, with additional material by David Bowie & Brian Eno, Tom Kenny & Andy Paley, Tom Kitt, and Jonathan Coulton.
