ABOUT THE SHOW
Rummaging through a box of her father’s stuff, the memories of Alison’s uniquely dysfunctional family—her mother, brothers, and her volatile, brilliant, enigmatic father—connect with her in surprising, powerful and revealing new ways. Based on Alison Bechdel’s best-selling graphic memoir with music by four-time past Tony Award®-nominee Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by past Tony-nominee Lisa Kron, Fun Home is a refreshingly honest coming-of-age story about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.
Though other shows in Broadway history have been based on memoirs (e.g., Gypsy), comic strips (Annie), and even paintings (Sunday in the Park with George), Fun Home may be the first Broadway musical whose source material is a memoir in graphic novel form.
In April 2014, the original Off Broadway cast presented a concert of music from the play in Charleston, SC in response to the South Carolina legislature’s attempted to financially punish the College of Charleston for choosing the original graphic novel as a reading selection for incoming freshmen.
Fun Home premiered Off Broadway at The Public Theater in October 2013 before transferring to Broadway. It is based on the 2006 graphic memoir of the same title by Alison Bechdel.
