Third Annual Film Series Open to the Public
Celebrate Tony Award Season at The Paley Center for Media

New York, NY (April 15, 2013) The Tony Awards have announced the line-up for the 3rd Annual Tony Awards Film Series, which will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at The Paley Center for Media. The Antoinette Perry “Tony” Awards, which are presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, will be broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall, on the CBS television network on Sunday, June 9, 2013.

The Tony Awards Film Series will screen the historic 1971 Tony Awards broadcast as well as the 1967 Armstrong Circle Theatre version of “Carousel.” Tickets will be available on a first come first serve basis, as seating is limited.

The Special Screening of the 1971 Tony Awards is free for Paley Center members, and free with general admission for the general public (with a suggested donation of $10 for adults; $8 for  students/senior citizens; and $5 for children under fourteen).

Tickets are required for the “Carousel” screening and discussion. Ticket prices for “Carousel” are $10 for Paley Center members and $15 for the general public.

The 25th Annual Tony Awards, held on March 28, 1971 was an affair to remember with musical numbers from each of the twenty-four previous Best Musicals.  The star-studded list of participants who re-created their original roles included Zero Mostel from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Fiddler on the Roof, Alfred Drake from  Kiss Me, Kate and Kismet, Robert Preston from The Music Man, Gwen Verdon from Damn Yankees and Redhead, and Carol Channing from Hello, Dolly! The program concluded with the entire onstage assemblage performing “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” and hosts Lauren Bacall, Anthony Quinn, Angela Lansbury, and Anthony Quayle helped turn it into an unforgettable event.

The Armstrong Circle Theatre adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical Carousel is presented in collaboration with The Paley Center and Opera Index. Originally aired in color on May 7, 1967, on ABC-TV it was directed by Paul Bogart and starred Robert Goulet as Billy Bigelow, Mary Grover as Julie Jordan, Marlyn Mason as Carrie, Patricia Neway as Nettie, Jack DeLon as Mr. Snow, Marge Redmond as Mrs. Mullin, and Pernell Roberts as Jigger, with famed veteran Charlie Ruggles as the Starkeeper. The storyline incorporates romance, crime, and death and is a tale that will never get old.

Following the screening there will be a discussion with actress Mary Grover and dancers Bambi Linn (“Louise” in the original Broadway production of Carousel) and Gemze de Lappe. Both dancers had a long association with the choreographer Agnes de Mille, and rare 1945 film footage of Ms. Linn dancing Carousel’s Act II “Ballet” will be shown.  The discussion will be moderated by Ted Chapin.
