Glenn Weiss honored with Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special

New York, NY (August 26, 2014) – The June 2013 broadcast of the 67th Annual Tony Awards was honored with its third Primetime Emmy Award® Monday evening. Glenn Weiss accepted the award for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special at the Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. Weiss has previously won an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Program in 2012 for the 65th Annual Tony Awards and in 2003 for the 56th Annual Tony Awards.

The 2013 broadcast was also awarded the honors for Outstanding Special Class Program – Ricky Kirshner, Executive Producer, Glenn Weiss Executive Producer and Neil Patrick Harris, Host/Producer – and Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics “Bigger!” – music by Tom Kitt, Lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda – at the Primetime Emmy Awards® Creative Arts Awards ceremony on Saturday, August 16, in Los Angeles. This is the third consecutive year that the Tony Awards have won in these two categories.

With Kirshner and Weiss at the helm since 2003, the Tony Awards have been honored in the Special Class Program category more than any other Awards show in history, winning in 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2008 and 2007. They were honored with Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special in 2005.

“Being able to direct such an amazing group of television and Broadway professionals at the same time is fulfilling in and of itself, being recognized for it is as good as it gets!” Weiss said.

“2013 was definitely a stand-out year for the Tony Awards, and we are incredibly proud that Glenn’s spectacular work continues to be honored by his industry colleagues and peers,” Charlotte St. Martin, Executive Director of The Broadway League, and Heather Hitchens, Executive Director of the American Theater Wing, said. “We are thrilled for everyone on the Tonys team who has been recognized over the past two weeks.”

Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss of White Cherry Entertainment have acted as executive producers of the Tony Awards telecast since 2004. During White Cherry’s tenure, the Tony Awards have been recognized with an unprecedented 34 Emmy nominations and 18 Emmy wins, including the best show in its class for the last 5 consecutive years, and 7 of the last 8 outings.  That recognition is far more than any time in Tony Awards history and is unparalleled by any other awards show today.

The Antoinette Perry “Tony” Award, which was founded by the American Theatre Wing in 1947, is bestowed annually on theatre professionals for distinguished achievement on Broadway.  The Tony is one of the most coveted awards in the entertainment industry and the annual telecast – the night America watches Broadway – is considered one of the most prestigious programs on television.
