Tennessee Williams’s poetic masterpiece is anchored by aging southern belle Amanda Wingfield (Cherry Jones), who hopes her son, Tom (Zachary Quinto), will fulfill her dreams of finding the perfect “gentleman caller” for her shy and damaged daughter, Laura (Celia Keenan-Bolger).

The Glass Menagerie premiered in Chicago in 1944 and quickly moved to Broadway, establishing Tennessee Williams as one of America’s major dramatists. The play has previously been revived on Broadway in 1965, 1975, 1983, 1994, and 2005. There was a Hollywood film version in 1950, and another in 1987 directed by Paul Newman. Television adaptations came in 1966 (Shirley Booth and Hal Holbrook) and 1973 (Katherine Hepburn).

  • Playwright Williams described The Glass Menagerie as a “memory play.” It is semi-autobiographical, based loosely on his own memories of his family.
  • Zachary Qunito's co-stars on TV's "American Horror Story: Asylum," Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson, starred in the 2005 Broadway revival of The Glass Menagerie as Amanda and Laura Wingfield, respectively.
