A Night with Janis Joplin

1 Nomination

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical

Like a comet that burns far too brightly to last, Janis Joplin (Mary Bridget Davies) exploded onto the music scene in 1967 for three incredible years, reigning as the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” The unmistakable voice filled with raw emotion and tinged with Southern Comfort made her a must-see headliner from Monterey to Woodstock. A Night With Janis Joplin is a musical journey celebrating Joplin and her biggest musical influences – trailblazers like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simone and Bessie Smith, who inspired one of rock ‘n’ roll’s greatest legends.

This production arrived in New York after premiering at Oregon’s Portland Center Stage in 2011, followed by engagements at Cleveland Play House; Arena Stage in Washington, DC; Pasadena Playhouse; and Milwaukee Repertory Theater.

  • Though her career was brief, Jains Joplin was one of the most legendary figures in the heyday of rock ‘n’ roll.  She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.
  • Joplin performed at the historic Woodstock festival in 1969.
  • She died of an overdose the following year at age 27.
