Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical

Set in the magical world of La Belle Epoque Paris, where fashion, glamour, and passion prevail, Lerner and Loewe’s celebrated musical is a romantic comedy about one young woman’s journey to find her true self... and her true love. The score features songs such as “Thank Heaven for Little Girls,” “I Remember It Well” and “The Night They Invented Champagne.” Vanessa Hudgens stars in the title role.

  • This production features an adapted musical book by Call the Midwife‘s Heidi Thomas. It contains all of the songs from the movie, including two that were dropped from the previous stage version, as well as the numbers Lerner & Loewe added to the score in 1973.
  • The opening night cast also includes past Tony Award-winner Victoria Clark and past-nominees Howard McGillin and Dee Hoty.

Based on the 1944 novella by the French writer Colette, Gigi was first adapted for the Broadway stage in 1951 by playwright Anita Loos, with an unknown Audrey Hepburn in the title role. Then, following their success with My Fair Lady, the team of Alan Jay Lerner (screenplay and lyrics) and Frederick Loewe (music) adapted the material for the 1958 movie musical, which went on to win nine Academy Awards including Best Picture. Lerner and Loewe created a stage version which opened on Broadway in 1973 and won the Tony Award for Best Score. The current production played a pre-Broadway engagement at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC in January and February of 2015.
