ABOUT THE SHOW
Set in 1975 during the final days of the American occupation of Saigon, Miss Saigon is an epic love story about the relationship between an American GI and a young Vietnamese woman. Orphaned by war, 17-year-old Kim is forced to work as a bar girl in a sleazy Saigon nightclub, owned by a notorious wheeler-dealer known as "The Engineer." John, an American GI, buys his friend Chris the services of Kim for the night—a night that will change their lives forever.
- This production was captured live at a performance in London and shown in cinemas across the US by Fathom Events in the fall of 2016.
- The musical is loosely based on the Puccini opera Madama Butterfly, which itself was based on a short story by American lawyer and writer John Luther Long and its Broadway stage adaptation by David Belasco.
The musical premiered in London in 1989, and opened on Broadway two years later. The original production received 11 Tony nominations, winning three in the acting categories—for Jonathan Pryce, Lea Salonga, and Hinton Battle. This 25th anniversary production originally opened in London in 2014 before transferring to Broadway.
