ABOUT THE SHOW

In 1917 Zurich, an artist - Tristan Tzara, a writer - James Joyce, and a revolutionary - Lenin, collide in a kaleidoscopic thrill-ride that's described as "wickedly playful, intensely entertaining, and infectiously theatrical."

Trivia

  • Several of the characters in Stoppard’s play are based on real people who were in Zurich at the time the action is set, including the Irish novelist James Joyce, the communist revolutionary V.I. Lenin, and avant garde poet, essayist, and performance artist Tristan Tzara.
  • The English consular official Henry Carr was also a real person, who did play Algernon in Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest with a group of actors called The English Players. The real James Joyce was the company’s business manager.

History

Travesties was first produced in 1974 by the Royal Shakespeare Company in London. It premiered on Broadway the following year and received the 1976 Tony Award for Best Play. This production is a transfer of the play’s 2017 West End staging.
