The Tony Awards Administration Committee met on April 6 for the third time this season to decide the eligibility of Broadway productions for the American Theatre Wing's 2017 Tony Awards®, presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing. The Committee will continue to meet regularly throughout the 2016-2017 Broadway season to make eligibility determinations.

Eligibility Determinations

The Committee confirmed the eligibility of six Broadway productions for the 2017 Tony Awards. Other shows will be discussed at future meetings. The shows considered are, in opening-night order:

August Wilson’s Jitney
Sunset Boulevard
Significant Other
The Glass Menagerie
Come From Away
Arthur Miller’s The Price

The Committee announced the following:

  • Tracy Christensen will be considered eligible in the Best Costume Design of a Musical category for her work on Sunset Boulevard.
  • David Cullen and Andrew Lloyd Webber will be considered eligible in the Best Orchestrations category for their work on Sunset Boulevard.
  • Gideon Glick will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play category for his performance in Significant Other.
  • Tony Shalhoub, Jessica Hecht and Danny DeVito will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by an Actor/Actress in a Featured Role in a Play categories for their respective performances in Arthur Miller’s The Price.

All other eligibility rulings were consistent with opening-night billing.

What that means: Unless the committee has determined otherwise, performers listed ABOVE the title on the show's opening-night Playbill are normally eligible in the Leading Actor/Actress categories. If a performer is listed BELOW the title, he or she is considered a "Featured" performer.

So if you don’t see the name of the performer you are interested in listed above, that generally means you can determine the category in which he or she will be eligible by consulting the show's Playbill (as of the opening night).
