Excellence in Theatre Education Award

The Tony Awards and Carnegie Mellon University Celebrate Excellence in Theatre Education

Submissions for the 2020 Excellence in Theatre Education Award are now open!

Behind every great performance is inspiration, and behind inspiration is a great teacher.

The Excellence in Theatre Education Award

Did a theatre educator make a difference in your life, or the life of someone you know? The Tony Awards® and Carnegie Mellon University are looking for the teachers who create the next generation of theatre artists. These dedicated professionals discover talented students, nurture them, inspire them and set them off on a lifelong journey as theatre supporters and professionals.

Each year we invite members of the public to submit candidates for the Excellence in Theatre Education Award by telling the story of a theatre educator who made a difference in their life, and the lives of others.

The Excellence in Theatre Education Award recognizes a K-12 theatre educator in the U.S. who has demonstrated monumental impact on the lives of students and who embodies the highest standards of the profession. The winning teacher will be recognized on the Tony Awards telecast on CBS. The award comes with a grant of $10,000 for the teacher's theatre program, and tickets for the winner to attend the Tony Awards ceremony and Gala.

MASTER CLASSES AND PRE-COLLEGE PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIPS FROM CARNEGIE MELLON

The Tonys and Carnegie Mellon will recognize the person or persons who submitted the Excellence in Theatre Education winner with an additional prize: Theatre professionals from Carnegie Mellon will arrange a special master class presentation for the winner’s school or organization.

In addition, two students from the theatre program overseen by the winner of the Excellence in Theatre Education Award will receive full scholarships to the six-week Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama Pre-College Program. The program will introduce students to its internationally acclaimed conservatory program through classes in acting, music theatre, design and production, taught by School of Drama faculty. The selected students will live on campus and take part in university activities and, together with fellow students, prepare for college auditions and interviews. Scholarship winners will be chosen by the winning teacher and/or his/her school.
