The whimsical plot of the musical is loosely taken from The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia, a pastoral romance written by 16th century British author Sir Philip Sidney.

The set featured a Latin motto inscribed atop the proscenium: “HABEMVS PERCVSSIO,” which translates as, “We got the beat.”

The musical has its world premiere at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon in 2015. A pre-Broadway tryout took place at San Francisco’s Curran Theatre in the spring of 2018.
